Dear Sunshine Beach State High School Families,
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for another exciting term ahead. This term is shaping up to be an exciting term with a wide range of extra-curricular activities and learning experiences.
Students can look forward to participating in the upcoming school Cross Country Carnival on Thursday, 1 May—a great chance to show House spirit and be involved! The popular House Cup competitions will continue throughout the term, promoting healthy rivalry and teamwork across year levels. Meanwhile, there is a new opportunity for chess players who will be representing the school in the Coolum, Noosa District, and Sunshine Beach Chess Championships.
A variety of excursions are also taking place this term, including the exciting Senior Biology and Marine Studies trip to North West Island, offering real-world learning in one of Queensland’s most pristine environments. In addition, our athletes will have multiple opportunities to shine through district sporting trials in a wide range of sports.
House Cup Points Update
Term 1 was full of fun activities for our students and staff. There will be many more this term and we strongly encourage all to participate including the upcoming school cross country. The House Cup is designed to have a full range of fun and inclusive activities that build a sense of belonging to the school and team spirit for each house. Well done to the Banzai Barbarians for holding the lead at the end of the term.
Anzac Day
This Friday our school leaders will be present at the Anzac Day march in Tewantin. It would be appreciated to have as many students as possible present in our formal uniform. We will be meeting at the assembly point in the Woolworths carpark at 9am.
Student Led Conferences
To support students in reflecting on their academic progress, Student Led Conferences will be held on Tuesday, 6 May from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. These conferences are an important opportunity for students to take ownership of their learning and discuss their interim report results and goals for the rest of the semester with their parents and teachers.
Subject Expo and Subject Selection
We are also excited to host our Subject Expo on Tuesday, 27 May. This event is designed to help students and their families gain valuable insights into the wide array of subject choices offered throughout the school. From junior pathways to senior curriculum options, this is a fantastic opportunity to ask questions, gather information, and plan for future academic success.
Following the subject expo, students will participate in subject selection for 2026. In early Term 3 our SET plans with Year 10 students will be choosing their senior subjects for 2026. This is essential to assist the school with our planning and staff allocation to facilitate the desired classes. Families will need to have paid subject fees for 2025 to be able to choose fee paying subjects for 2026.
Subject Fees and SRS
As we look ahead, we kindly remind families about the importance of paying subject fees. These fees contribute directly to the resources and materials required for students to fully engage in their chosen subjects and allow our school to offer the wide variety of subjects that the students enjoy. Many subjects do not have a subject fee and the student's resources are funded under the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) or directly by parents who choose not to participate in the Student Resource Scheme.
Sunshine Beach State High School operates under the Queensland Department of Education’s Student Resource Scheme (SRS), which enables families to access high-quality learning resources—such as textbooks, equipment, and materials—at a significantly reduced cost. Participating in the SRS ensures students have everything they need for a smooth and successful learning experience. The cost of the SRS in 2025 is $300.
Before the introduction of the Queensland Department of Education’s Student Resource Scheme (SRS), families were required to purchase all student learning materials themselves. This included textbooks, novels, stationery, software licenses, art and technology supplies, and other subject-specific equipment—often costing hundreds of dollars per student each year. Managing these purchases individually is both time-consuming and expensive, especially for families with multiple children at school. The SRS was introduced to make access to essential educational resources more affordable and equitable. By participating in the scheme, families benefit from significant cost savings, while students have seamless access to the materials they need for the school year. If you have elected on your students enrolment to be part of the Student Resource Scheme, your payment of this fee is appreciated.
The Queensland Government supports students’ education by providing funding for:
• Instruction, e.g. teachers
• Facilities, e.g. buildings, amenities, furniture
• Administration, e.g. staffing and resources to administer the operations of the school.
Funding does not extend to individual student resources which is either purchased directly by the parent or supplied by the school to those who have indicated upon enrolment that they will participate in the Student Resource Scheme.
School Photos
We have now received the school photos. If you have placed an order through Leading Image, these will be distributed to students during Community Time next week.
Name the New Boat
Our school participates in many aquatic subjects including Marine Studies, Sport and Rec, Biology and Aquatic Practices. We are well resourced with many watercraft though we have had a need for a new mother ship to support the students engagement and learning. We will be taking passion of the boat below very soon.
The vessel has been constructed into survey as a water safety vessel and we have decided on its purchase based on seaworthiness and suitability for our school activities. We intend to use it as a mother ship for our smaller craft for activities in Noosa River and also at North West Island. It will replace our current support boat in these programs.
This term we will be facilitating a 'Name the boat' activity through the house cup program. The student who comes up with the selected name will also have their name referenced on the boat. More information will be released soon on this.
We’re looking forward to a productive and inspiring Term 2.
Thank you for your continued support in helping every student at Sunshine Beach SHS thrive.
Kind regards
